COUNCILLOR LIU’S WARD 3 COMMUNITY UPDATE

2018 July Edition

Dear Ward 3 Residents,

I hope you are all enjoying the summer. Please see below my community update for our ward.

1/ Richmond Hill mosquito trap tests positive for West Nile virus

A mosquito trap in Richmond Hill has tested positive for West Nile virus. The Regional Municipality of York monitors the virus activity by setting mosquito traps throughout the region. To date, one mosquito trap at Leslie Street and Major Mackenzie Drive East has tested positive.

Tips to get rid of mosquito-friendly areas at home

  • Clean up stagnant water found in bird baths, flower pots, swimming pool covers and clogged eaves troughs.
  • Ensure the window screens on your home are tight-fitting and in good repair.
  • Cover up while outside.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET or icaridin — check the label directions for use.

6/ Toronto Pearson Testing Temporary Weekend Runway Alternation Program – Weekends July 28, 2018 to September 16, 2018

The test phase will take place on weekends outside of the nighttime preferential runway hours (12 midnight to 6:30 a.m.) from July 28 to September 16.

The summer weekend runway alternation test will involve alternating the use of the east-west runways.  This has the potential to provide residents in those areas with periods of predictable respite from aircraft noise.

To help you better understand this program, please see attached document here.

The eight-weekend test period will ensure that those who live in the areas involved can evaluate the program and provide feedback.  It will also provide opportunity for the GTAA to collect operational data and evaluate the practical feasibility of the program.
