COUNCILLOR LIU’S WARD 3 COMMUNITY UPDATE

2018 December Edition

Dear Ward 3 residents,

As we approach the holiday season, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a wonderful holiday and a very happy new year.

Lately, there has been an obvious increase of Break and Enter in our neighbourhood and I would like to remind all residents to secure their homes, watch for suspicious activities and turn on the porch lights during night hours to light up the neighbourhood as much as possible. This has promoted York Regional Police to increase patrol in the area.

Tips to prevent theft during the holiday season

  1. Keep your lights on.
  2. Everyone gets excited for their holiday vacations – especially burglars. Empty houses and apartments are prime targets for thieves. Leaving your lights on, setting your holiday decorations and lights on an automatic timer. This will give potential intruders the illusion that someone is indeed home.
  3. Leave your shopping bags out of sight.
  4. With the hustle and bustle of the holidays come lots of errands and Christmas shopping. As you rush from store to store, it can be easy to leave your bags, packages, and gifts in the back seat of your car and in plain sight for robbers. Be sure to hide your purchases or put them in the trunk of your car so you do not become a target for theft. Also, do not forget to lock your car doors, and try to park in a well-lit area.
  5. Protect all entryways.
  6. Not all thieves enter your home through the front door. Before you leave for your holiday vacation ensure that all your back door, balcony door, front door, windows, garage door, etc. are all locked and secure.
  7. Let your neighbors know when you are leaving and when you are coming back.
  8. Take advantage of friends and acquaintances who will be home when you are not. They want to keep your apartment building, dorm or neighborhood safe, too.
  9. Put your mail delivery on hold or ask a friend to bring it in for you daily.
  10. Burglars often look for piles of newspapers or overstuffed mailboxes to determine whether you are out of town.

Auto-theft

In light of the increase of auto-thefts in York Region lately, several Neighbourhood Watch leaders and myself met with the York Regional Police auto-theft unit on December 12. Here are some highlights from the meeting:

  • Since September, 45 autos were stolen in York Region, and close to 500 in all of GTA
  • Luxury cars were mainly targeted
  • Thefts usually occurred during 12am – 5am when people are sleeping

Snow Removal News and Notices

Richmond Hill plows and sands municipal sidewalks during the winter months. We aim to clear all sidewalks 14 hours after a snowfall. We also plow the streets after major snowfalls. Residents can help staff get this job done by doing the following:

  • Not parking vehicles over or near sidewalks, so the path is clear for plows and sanding equipment
  • Not parking on the road during plowing activity
  • Not shoveling snow back onto the road or sidewalks
  • Not placing anything within one meter of a road, curb or sidewalk that can become hidden and cause issues for plow operators
  • Clearing the snow from around fire hydrants to make them accessible in case of an emergency
  • Wearing proper footwear to prevent slips and falls
